Septic Tank Installation Guidelines

Site Conditions

The site must be accessible to large, heavy crane equipment. A firm, level area must be provided to permit for safe unloading by our operator. It must be free of overhead wires (the Electrical Safety Authority recommends a minimum 10’ clearance from any lines), tree branches or other obstructions that could affect crane operation.

Septic tanks are typically of a weight that requires them to be unloaded from the rear of the truck. We may need to be within 3 to 10 feet (1 to 3 metres) of the excavation to unload depending on the size of the tank.

Our drivers are instructed not to unload in any condition that might compromise their safety or cause damage to our equipment.

Excavation

Please ensure utility locates are completed prior to excavation. A minimum of 12” (300mm) clearance is required on all sides to allow us to remove our lifting equipment following placement. More space needs to be allowed if work needs to be done to the exterior of the tank after placement.

Bedding Material

The excavation must be level and free of large rocks and stones. We recommend a base of gravel or crushed stone be used minimum 6” (150mm) deep for all installations but require it for all installations of tanks 2000 gallon (9000L) or larger. In unstable soil conditions or in areas where there is a high water table it is the responsibility of the contractor to ensure that suitable bedding material is used.

Backfilling

Large rocks or saturated clay should not be used as backfill material or to cover the tanks. Backfill should not be dropped from a height greater than 3’ (1m). The maximum depth that our tanks may be buried is also 1m. Equipment should not be closer to the tank than the line of excavation and at no time should drive onto the tank. Excavating equipment should not be used to push on the tank to level it or move it. Care should also be taken to backfill tanks in high water table areas before they have the opportunity to float.

Testing

Our tanks are engineered to rely on the surrounding earth for support. At no time should the liquid level on the inside of the tank exceed the level of backfill by more than 2 feet (600mm). If testing is required make sure ample time is given to allow the mastic to settle (typically 24 hours) and the tank has been backfilled.
